It’s both a tone and a symbol of deep meaning and origins in Hinduism. It is pronounced “AUM” and has four syllables: A, U, M, and the silent syllable when properly pronounced.
How do you use the word om?
The initial syllable is A, which is pronounced as a long “awe.” You stretch out the sound that starts at the back of your mouth. You’ll notice that your solar plexus and chest begin to vibrate.
The second syllable is U, which is pronounced as a sustained “oo,” rolling forward over your upper palate. You’ll notice a vibration in your throat.
The third syllable is M, which is pronounced with your front teeth softly meeting in a sustained “mmmm.” The top of your mouth will begin to vibrate at this stage.
The Infinite’s deep silence is the final syllable. You must blend the chant from the M to the deep silence, as wisdom emerges from the deep silence.
The three letters symbolically represent Shakti’s spiritual energies and its three key characteristics: (1) creation, (2) protection, and (3) emancipation.
